Part 4

1) Roark's resort at Monadnock Valley provides for a disillusioned young man who had always wanted to write music "the courage to face a lifetime." Given that Roark had never met the boy before, and would never see him again, what point does the author make regarding the nature of creative achievement? Contrast this episode with the effect that Toohey's counseling has on the young people who come to him for advice. Which has a benevolent impact on other men--Roark's life of personal accomplishment or Toohey's call for sacrifice to the collective?

2) At the end of the novel, Roger Enright buys Cortlandt Homes and hires Roark to build it in accordance with his original design. Wynand hires Roark to erect the Wynand Building, the world's tallest skyscraper. Roark marries Dominique Francon. He has succeeded completely, and on his own terms. What point does the author make regarding the nature of success? In contrast to the evil Toohey, what point does she make regarding the nature and power of the good?

1. Roark shows the young man that if you're creative, you should use your creativity to do great things instead of letting it go to waste. It doesn't matter what the mainstream thinks about you. All you have to do is find your niche and stay there, no matter what anyone else says. He takes pride in everything he does.
Toohey's theory is the opposite. He doesn't believe in individualism and he tells young people to just do what society asks them to do, because individuals just make everything more complicated for everyone. He is extremely manipulative and mediocre. Roark's ideals have more of an impact. If you ignore any creativity you have in order to appeal to the mainstream, you're just wasting your life. It's better to be bold and individual.

2. Success can't be measured by money or even power. If you are content with your work and your situation, you're successful. Though in many parts of the book Roark is starving and poor, he is successful because he doesn't ever allow himself to suffer.
It's better to succeed by being an individual than just going with the crowd. Every great achiever in man's history was rejected at first because there are so many people who are against change. It's a waste of time to try and convince people that what you do is for the best. Instead it's better to find like-minded people and stick with them, and not care about what anyone else says or thinks. Don't worry about conquering the world with anything you do. If it pleases you completely, then it's right. Live for yourself, not for others.

1. Creativity can link one person in the world to any other. It could be the emotion executed in a painting, for example, that would inspire someone to, become a better person. Our creativity is a gift that we should use for the greater good, it is not something we should hide away in secret. Because if we do, we may never give inspiration to those who are seeking it. All would be lost if the only perfect inspiration that one person in the world could receive would be from you and you had failed to do all your creative talent could do. Toohey tells people to follow the crowd, stay the same, don't stand out. Because if you do, you're just getting in the way. Toohey doesn't beleive that one person can make a difference, so he tells everyone to give up too. He also puts people down in hopes that they will not beleive in themselves, which would force them to do exactly what he wants them to do, be the same.

2. Success isn't being the CEO of a major company. It's not even the amount of people who love you (who knows if they truly love you?) nor the amount of money. Success is learning whatever you learn one day and knowing how to apply the next. Success is as long as you are happy with whatever it is you become in the end.
Toohey represents the classic case of good vs, evil. Or more casually, the bold and the bland. If you are rejected by others first, but you beleive in what you're doing, that is how you know you are really successful as long as it is what you want, do it! Others will follow you, just wait and see. Here's some advice, if you would like to stay normal, hidden, ignored, just follow the crowd, don't take chances and don't do what you beleive in. If you want to be the magnificent, well, be you.
